Pulau Singa Besar-Langkawi’s Unscathed Wonder Island

Pulau Singa Besar or Big Lion Island is situated in the south-west of Langkawi, positioned 40 minutes away from Kuah Jetty and nested between Pulau Dayang and Pulau Beras Basah. It is considered to be one of the most charming places to visit in Malaysia, since it is covered by a luxuriant tropical rainforest, and high, sharp hills. The northern part of the island displays amazing limestone outcrops that are 500 million years old. One of the most remarkable formations has the shape of a lion, giving the island its unique name.

Flora and fauna

Pulau Singa Besar is home to various species of fauna and flora. In 1998 the island was officially declared an animal sanctuary and a forest reserve. The palm-shaped cycas fern is famous for its distinctive smell and it is considered to be a real fossil. While wandering through the local woods you may see iguanas, peacocks, mouse deer, hornbills, eagles, macaques, lizards, monkeys, and even wild pigs. Most of the animals found on this island appeared on the Asian continent 34 million years ago, during the Oligocene era. Hence, all those travelers who don’t know what to do in Langkawi should definitely head for this spectacular place.
As far as flora is concerned, you should know that this island is crowded with tropical forests where tourists will get the chance to admire countless Diptherocarp trees. A walk through these outstanding forests will reveal a large number of creepers, lianas, young saplings, and rattan. Pulau Singa Besar also features various ornamental and flowering shrubs, which can be found in the picnic areas. Apart from them, there are plenty of fruits bearing trees that have been added in an attempt to attract birds.

The Lion Island features really beautiful sceneries that will impress any visitor, so if you are looking for mesmerizing things to do in Malaysia, you should consider exploring this site. Its high, steep hills are dressed in dense tropical forest. Here you will found unique fauna and flora that are nothing like those traditionally found on the mainland. The sedimentary rock formations on this island are among the oldest rocks in Malaysia. They feature incredible shapes, thus making the Big Lion Island an exceptional place.

Protected wildlife

There are plenty of interesting things to do in Langkawi, and admiring the wildlife on the Pulau Singa Besar (which is protected by the state) is undoubtedly one of them. There are no hotels or resorts, so tourists who want to spend the night on this island are advised to bring their tents. The beauty of this pristine island has not been destroyed by civilization and fancy constructions. Visitors can actually spot iguanas, monkeys, lizards, eagles, peacocks and macaques in their natural habitat. You may also see wild pigs and deer roaming around the island. The traveling sites and special pathways are marked tracks inside the jungle and they enable trekkers and visitors to bond with nature by visiting the place. Travelers to Pulau Singa Besar are invited to enjoy lovely picnics on the beach and swim in the crystal-clear water.

Eagle watching

If you’re wondering where to go in Malaysia, you should know that Pulau Singa Besar is a great option. However, the main attraction of this place is eagle watching, an activity that gives visitors the chance to admire eagles from a small distance. The local guides say that these eagles are trained to listen to the sound of arriving boats so that they can eat the pieces of food thrown in the sea by visitors. If you attend an eagle watching trip, you will be able to see thousands of wonderful brown and white eagles hurrying to grab the pieces thrown in the water. They will fly right above your head, showing off their shiny feathers.
